Rotten Tomatoes Ultimate Binge Guide is essentially a reference book covering decades of television. It’s a great read for pop culture addicts and television enthusiasts, as well as something they can enjoy without having to read every page. Much like the website, the book compiles ratings and descriptions of various shows. In addition, there are fun excerpts covering such topics as the history of binging formats, the evolution of television fandom, and binge battles between shows. In an era where Netflix represents the evolution of the couch potato, this book will feed the unhealthy appetites of some fans, while providing entertaining reading to others.Rotten Tomatoes Ultimate Binge Guide is essentially a reference book covering decades of television. Matthew Bogart and Jesse Holden’s Incredible Doom is a graphic novel about the early days of the Internet. It centers on a group of teens forging online friendships before social media pervaded every inch of our lives. The students' lives cross through a series of unsettling circumstances ranging from school bullies to domestic violence. Online they find a common bond that is only strengthened by their isolation and punk rock attitude. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the other volumes in the series. It is obvious that this first volume only serves as an introduction. I am interested in seeing where Bogart and Holden take the characters from here.Matthew Bogart and Jesse Holden’s Incredible Doom is a graphic novel about the early days of the Internet. In 1989 Bucharest, Cristian is 17 years-old when he is coerced by a Securitate agent to spy on the family of an American diplomat. While on the surface he has no choice but to comply, in his heart he has other plans - to expose the oppression Romanians have been living under for the past 24 years under the Communist dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu. The appeal of Ruta Sepetys' historical fiction is that her research uncovers stories that have rarely (if ever) been told, and her writing turns them into gripping page-turners with well-developed characters who make these stories unforgettable. In 1989 Bucharest, Cristian is 17 years-old when he is coerced by a Securitate agent to spy on the family of an American diplomat. Mark Synnott’s The Impossible Climb is about Alex Honnold’s free solo climb of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park in 2017. Honnold’s climb was also the inspiration for the Oscar winning film Free Solo produced by National Geographic and directed by Jimmy Chin and his wife, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi (2018). Synnott accompanied Honnold on many of his climbs and was present the day he accomplished this enormous feat.
Pros
Great book for students interested in rock climbing or extreme sports. Contains a glossary of common terms associated with rock climbing. Discusses interesting climbing locations that students could easily Google or search on YouTube. It also discusses historic climbs and legendary climbers that could be further researched.
Cons
While the book is interesting, this is one of those rare times where it really pays off to watch the film. No matter how much Synnott describes Honnold’s climbs or the free solo climb in detail, nothing compares to the chilling experience of watching it happen. Honnold is like a real-life Spiderman as he climbs the entire length of El Capitan without safety gear.Mark Synnott’s The Impossible Climb is about Alex Honnold’s free solo climb of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park in 2017. A.J. Dungo’s In Waves is both a brief history of surfing and a reflection on love and loss. The sea evokes metaphor as it represents solace, in addition to grief and retreat. The graphic novel has a minimalist color palette of earthy browns and aquamarine blues. The colors are soft and somber as if reflecting the mood of the text. This is a great read that deals with love, loss, and life realistically. It is a good alternative to young adult books which often depict relationships as predictable, cliched romances set within the genres of fantasy or dystopia.A.J.
