I thought that this movie was a fabulous representation of the book. I loved the "Special Features" section with the deleted scenes, how the original song was written, and the interview with the author.

This true story is a complicated tale of contradictions. I read the book years ago, and remember really liking it. I have never been a big fan of Woody Harrelson, but he played this part so well. His character made me so angry. Because…Read moreRead more of this comment

An idealized, fragmented adaptation of the excellent memoir by Jeannette Walls. The movie does not have the same effect as the book does. The child actors are very good. Not a bad movie on its own but I am glad I read the book.

I hadn't heard anything about this movie before watching (or the book). Really powerful acting performances by all - especially Woody Harrelson (I don't think anyone else could have pulled this off). Fascinating, warm, funny, then…Read moreRead more of this comment
I liked this biography DVD. Chronicling the adventures of an eccentric, resilient and tight-knit family. A remarkable story of unconditional love. A young woman who, influenced by the joyfully wild nature of her deeply dysfunctional…Read moreRead more of this comment

Not as good as the book; they left out almost everything from the first half of the book, I guess because those things happened in the western states. (WV must have been the main attraction in the movie because it's the stereotypical image…Read moreRead more of this comment

Difficult to believe this is a true story, but it was. It's amazing that the children made it out with normal lives of their own. Woody H was great in this role. Jennifer Lawrence was originally cast to play the mother, but backed out.

Lots of difference between the book and the movie. Harellson was perfect for the part..
Father was a drunken monster. Dept of Family services should have placed those kids in foster care and charged the parents with child abuse.

After watching the trailer I expected this to be a different story, but I believe this is another "Captain fantastic". I hated "Captain fantastic" and I hated this movie too, therefore I could not finish it. The parenting style was just…Read moreRead more of this comment

At times the film makers made light of the helpless children’s ordeals, but overall, a nauseating story about growing up with “irresponsible” parents in poverty. Further, felt for the adult daughter who must have been in constant social…Read moreRead more of this comment

The book stayed on the NY Times best sellers list for a reason. Family dysfunction and alcoholism in American families is common. Add poverty and sexual abuse----the result is quite ugly. I think that what resonated among readers was that…Read moreRead more of this comment
