Magisterial. With another variation on the gangster genre, Martin Scorsese takes his place alongside John Ford, who defined the western across several decades. The deliberate pacing suits the protagonist's persona--this is a tale told by an old and unreliable narrator who realizes, too late, that he has lost his biological family by committing himself to other families--organized crime, labor unions. A moving character study of Frank Sheeran, played beautifully by Robert DeNiro, "The Irishman" also features captivating, convincing performances in the secondary roles. Plus, the film offers a hitman's tour through major historical events of the 20th century--World War II, postwar prosperity and anxiety, the JFK administration and assassination. One of the essential Scorsese pictures.
