This is the second book by the author in a Sherlock Holmes and Watson series. I haven't read the previous book and I wont bother to. I generally enjoy any Holmes books that fit the canon and this one does. Or at least it does not particularly disagree with it. Trying to avoid any spoilers I would say that the plot depends on a backstory, discovered by Watson, of Holmes having had a tragic love story when young with a character totally different from "the one". My problem with the book is; with the plot, which is extremely convoluted with various largely disconnected sub-plots, the non canonical characters who are all (including Holmes' clients) corrupt, venal, deceitful, and criminal, and the canonical characters. Mycroft is a blunt instrument, Watson is as susceptible to the ladies as ever but apparently struggling with a gambling problem which is occasionally mentioned but never expanded on and Holmes is not particularly sharp and displays neither wit nor acumen. The mysteries are wound up by various acts of violence over which Holmes and Watson have little or no effect.
