If you're looking to be frightened, you might be disappointed. As a neat mystery that the characters try to solve and as a nice look at a place and time (Cornwall in 1937), it succeeds. The book has many more characters and sub-plots and some points have been compressed but it's a fun movie. One change that improves the movie is some clever quips the screenwriters gave to the character of Rick (Roddy in the novel.) Even though you will know a key plot point after seeing this, try the book for more of the same. And reading it with the actors in mind helps since they were all well cast.
