There are movies you need to give your full attention to; where you don't want to miss a thing. And then there are movies you can watch while you're doing other things--your taxes, household cleaning, trimming the cat's toenails. "Help!" falls into the latter category. I want to absolutely love this movie the way I absolutely loved the joyous, groundbreaking mockumentary romp "A Hard Day's Night"--it's the Beatles in their youthful prime, you know?--but I have to throw in with those who just don't get what all the fuss is about. Frankly "Help!" hasn't aged well, especially compared to "Night." ManMachine offers some interesting behind-the-scenes insight that probably explains a lot. I'd add that, as with the Elvis, the Beatles had become such a phenomenon that the industry Powers That Be likely concluded it hardly mattered how good or bad their "product" being was--adoring audiences would show up for it anyway. Aw, hell. It's the Beatles. Check it out and see what you think.
