For Cause and Comrades
For Cause and Comrades Why Men Fought in the Civil War By McPherson, James M. Book - 1997

When I have thought about the American Civil War, what motivated people to stand shoulder to shoulder and fire across a field at the other side that are doing the same and see your friends die right next to you then do the same thing all over again, day after day, year after year. It is the same things that motivate soldiers today that defend our freedoms, even though the methods have changed, the motives have not. Excerpts from actual letters form this book into a very well arranged account that gives you a look into the hearts of these soldiers on both sides of this war, ALL Americans, fighting for what they held dear in life. A great book, well-written. I would highly recommend it, not just for Civil War interests but for today's as well.
