Five years after the Civil War, Captain Kidd moves from town to town as a storyteller. In Texas, he crosses paths with Johanna, a ten-year-old taken in by the Kiowa people six years earlier. She is being returned to her biological aunt and uncle against her will. Kidd agrees to deliver the child where the law says she belongs. As they travel hundreds of miles, the two will face tremendous challenges of both human and natural forces as they search for a place that either can call home.

I enjoyed this movie as it was such a different role for Tom Hanks. The chemistry between him and his young co-star was amazing. She more than kept up with him throughout the film. Again, make sure to watch the making of extras.

Both the movie and the book it is based on are enjoyable if one is interested in situations of those times in the US - just after the Civil War in Texas and the start of removing Natives from their homelands to open up land for settlers. I was interested in the predicament of the young white settler girl taken from her dead family by the Natives and brought up as their own for 4 years - enough time for the child to bond with the Native Kiowa family who took her in and then did not want to leave them. The film certainly shows the rough frontier people living on the outskirts of civilization, their primitive isolated villages/towns, and the easy lawlessness when guns are pulled to settle disputes. The bleak setting includes many shots of the dusty road that connected these far flung Western villages as the Captain and the girl travel through the miles of isolated desert, a horrendous dust storm, and experience danger on this journey. Expect many shots were lighting is poor - evening campsite chats around a glowing fire, weakly lit interior shots, or early morning wakeups. I thought the movie re-captured the feel and look of the Old West. All actors do an excellent job.

I very much enjoyed this. Shows in one scene when the main character has a choice to read the real news or made up propaganda of a towns "owner". He had to choice the reality of the situation fast. Seems conviction is lost on today's society. Praise for the writing, visuals and understanding of a time when people didn't have the access to even basic reading material.

In the meagre economy of the post-Civil War south, a former Confederate officer makes a living travelling from town to town reading “News of the World” to the semi-literate locals from his newspapers of distant places. In his travels he happens upon a wild child he doesn’t know what to do with but he's too decent to leave her unprotected. And the rest of the movie is about two terrific actors making the viewer feel everything their characters feel as the harsh life of the old west throws these two very different people together. As always Tom Hanks makes acting seem effortless, so the surprise of the film is that newcomer Helena Zengel (12 years old when the movie was made) holds her own in their scenes together. Although there are moments of peril, I enjoyed spending time with these characters so much that I would have liked the film even more if it had omitted the action, but I still found News of the World to be engrossing, moving, and delightful.

Boring, slow movie. Not much of a story line and glad it was over with no real ending..

I never get tired of viewing Tom Hanks on screen it's as if he has found the Fountain of Youth when it comes to acting. In the Special Features he was quoted as saying, "I don't know anything and that's how I approach everything." So maybe he did find that fountain after all. He said of Helena Zengle who plays Johanna, "She knows everything." I think he was speaking in more than just a movie making manner. This appears to be Fred Hechinger's first film role but it didn't feel like it, he was a natural and Greengrass is one of those fantastic director's who doesn't mind taking advice from his actor's; something which is ordinarily prohibited in this business of show, so when you find one who not only encouraging but accepting the advice, is very rare and exceptional.

An unusual western when chance brought together an upstanding Captain Kidd and a Kiowa raised 10 year old orphan Johanna. While journeying to Johanna's extended family, they learn from each other about language, families, tragedies and tribal customs like songs. There are several intense scenes and none more dramatic than when Captain Kidd and I squint to see through the waning ferocious dust storm.

Tom Hanks is always great in roles that require a quiet strength of character. The story can be seen as a quest undertaken with reluctance by the protagonist. As such, he is placed in situations that reflect how people in Texas dealt with being on the losing side of the Civil War. The world is dangerous, beautiful, and confusing, so doing the right thing is not always obvious or safe.

Tom Hanks did a wonderful job in this movie, as did the young girl.Sorry I can't think of her name. The problem I had with this movie was them number of catastrophies that happened to them. That part was not based in reality. Sure they could have had some the adventures, but seriously it was just too much of a stretch for me. Some editor should have deleted a lot of scenes and had the director/writer lengthen some others.

Good entertainment, excellent acting by Tom Hanks and a fictional glimpse of 1870 Texas history. Some questionable changes from the novel, but nevertheless an intriguing storyline.
