Set in 1920s Toronto, the series follows the city's only female private detectives as they take on cases the police don't want to touch. In a time of change and hopefulness, their gender is their biggest advantage as they defy expectations and rebel against convention. The Private Detectives take on cases that explore every cross-section of Toronto, from gospel church choirs, bathing beauties and the early cinema scene, to the homes and private parties of the city's elite.

I wanted to like this Canadian mystery series, but I did not find the acting or plot lines convincing. Mild recommendation. Kristi & Abby Tabby

definitely "entertainment" as opposed to "fine art," but that is still legal here. perhaps those who didn't care for this might consider reflecting on the difference between their personal opinions and empirical truth, which are not always the same thing. nothing is dreck simply because an unreflective person hates it, which would suggest that all those who like it are wrong. that sort of "thinking" explains much about the last election....,
and pbs doesn't need an excuse to put their name & money behind anything they choose.

3.7 stars. So, this is not on a par with Vera, or Inspector George Gently. A few of the episodes were lacking in originality or intrigue, but maybe half got us involved and were very entertaining. Many of the characters are quite charming and well acted. The old planes, cars and motorcycled are period pieces, but the dialogue is a tad too contemporary.
Give it a try. At least episodes 2, 5, 8, 9...

Dreck. This is the most unwatchable series I've seen in a very long time. Absolutely the worst production ever to wear the PBS label, from the writing to the achingly painful acting, it makes me wince to recall it now.
All I can manage to consider to absolve PBS from putting their money and name to this monstrosity, is that it's Canadian (a polite and unremarkable land far, far away), and clearly meant for the homeschooled, born again types who watch nothing that isn't at least half a century or more behind contemporary times, and contains no language, costumes or theme to cause the slightest rise in blood pressure to the wrong parts of the anatomy. Hallmark Channel dreck.
There really is no reasonable excuse to produce and distribute something this bad. Shame on PBS for this one.
