"On a cold night in February, the popular Lighterman's Ball festivities are cut short when a guest of honor, Stephen Bremmer, goes into spasms and abruptly collapses. Once again Inspector Witherspoon returns to the Wrexley Hotel to investigate a murder. The victim was considered a boorish snob who felt entitled to anything and anyone he wanted. Yet despite his Oxford education, he was barely literate, lazy, and prone to make stupid mistakes--his last mistake turned out to be crossing a killer. The owners and management of the Wrexley Hotel clearly don't welcome the return of Inspector Witherspoon, but he has his job to do, and Mrs. Jeffries and the rest of the household must do their best to catch a murderer who shows no signs of slowing down. Stephen Bremmer dies of arsenic poisoning at a ball. Wiggins happens to be in attendance, squiring a friend's sister to the event. So the Upper Edmonton Gardens sleuths get a little head start on this murder. It doesn't take long to determine that Bremmer was a miserable excuse for a human being. No one liked him. And he was a blackmailer. Now to just narrow down the field to one person.

Snobbishness plays a large part in the proceedings. Some bit players who have helped out before with gossip help out again. Phyllis comes into her own as an investigator. Smythe almost spills the beans about his wealth. Mrs. Goodge and Ruth Cannonberry have smaller parts to play, while Wiggins plays a larger role. Although Mrs. Jeffries figures it out, the murderer precipitates things toward the end, so she does not have to resort to anonymous notes to the inspector or any of her other strategems to encourage her employer to arrest the right person.
