In the Heights is the 2008 Tony-winner for Best Musical and the first solo Broadway show for Hamilton (2015) creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Though the summer premiere of the motion picture adaptation by John Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) has been indefinitely postponed, the trailer promises an energetic, emotional version of the already lively story. Set in the neighborhood of Washington Heights in NYC where Miranda grew up, In the Heights is a joy-filled show about a close-knit community and the struggles the characters face in a few days’ time. Intertwined with the adversity in the show is the immigrant background of the neighborhood, and the strength all the characters are ingrained with as a result of their personal histories. There are songs for romances, for individual dreams, and for slice-of-neighborhood-life moments. Though there are moments of grief in the musical, they can’t compete with the humor, passion, and jubilation of the piece as a whole. For fans of Hamilton, In the Heights shows some of the same ensemble-style and multi-genre songs (including rap). While Hamilton as an entire work is in its own category, In the Heights is definitely its predecessor and is an effervescent show that provides greatly-needed representation to contemporary theater with a simple and relatable premise. Absolutely love it. I'm a Hamilton fan, and I appreciate it not only because it's awesome and rhythmic, but also because of the message that comes with the music. This musical has a different message, and it was harder for me to find it in the music, but after I found it, I appreciated it just as much. Just trust me, if you like Hamilton, then you will like this. Plus, it has just as much rap and hip hop, so if you like that, then try this. (I would recommend learning Spanish. It's 50 percent in that language.)

The musical that convinced my Lin-Manuel Miranda was a genius back in 2008. A beautiful show about family and community that deserves just as much love as Hamilton.

Love "Hamilton"? Give this one a listen. It's Lin-Manuel Miranda's first Broadway musical (which also won a Tony Award for Best Musical) and it's just as fabulous as "Hamilton" is, I promise!
