This reviewer saw this one in the movie theater in 2002, 3D bullet and all. Conclusion then: It all rested on the shoulders of Brosnan's final Bond outing, with the director trying to market to Vin Diesel/"XXX" fans.
In retrospect, Die Another Day is a Minneapolis Aquatennial-like fireworks display to cap the perfect Brosnan-Bond Trilogy, and a 40th-anniversary best-of-moments display (yes, Bond flipping his Aston Martin back upright with the ejector seat is f@#$ing awesome), and a way to finally pair 007 with his female equal.
A second viewing (and an Ice Palace Martini to wash down some shoddy special effects) might bump this review up a star.
No! Die Today! Actually, this film, franchise, & character are already dead. Thanks Barbara Broccoli... : P This is the worst one yet! She's still going down her "feminist" road, with all the prominent female villains & heroes. But now we have:
> Females being able to outdo Bond
> Female Bosses to Bond
> Bond making it with Moneypenny (there's a no-no in this storyline if I've ever seen one)
> Female characters equal to or greater than Bond
> These same Females saving Bond, multiple times!
> And the Pièce De Résistance: the 'female Bond' (along side him) played (throughout the entire film) by Halle Berry.
Yes, now, in 2018, they are talking about just making Bond female (Hello 'Ghost Losers'), but she was basically test-driving that premise here in this film. (Just conditioning the viewers, over time.)
But wait! There's more!! Aside from her 'feminization' takeover of Bond, the PC takeover of the film is unreal. Again, THINK ABOUT WHERE THE MONEY COMES FROM TO MAKE THESE MOVIES! We have China & North Korea!!! as the good guys! And the son of the N.K. General (& his N.K. sidekick) who is/are the main villain(s), were "corrupted by the West"! LOL!!!! (Yes, because North Korea <along with China & Cuba> are such bastions of freedom & prosperity...) Of course, they have to have Cuba in it too, and between them & N.K., we're supposed to believe that they are militarily & technologically superior to anyone else in the World. Come on people, WAKE UP!
Lastly, but a LONG TIME pet peeve, here's a note for you Follywood: If you want a character to be in the film until the end, DON'T KILL THEM IN THE FIRST 3 MIN., & THEN 50,000 SUBSEQUENT TIMES THROUGHOUT THE MOVIE!
This is probably the worst James Bond film ever. To start off, Pierce Brosnan was probably the worst possible Bond to cast for this film because of the other films he's starred in, such as GoldenEye. His performance in GoldenEye was mediocre, and that's not good enough for Bond. Secondly, Die Another Day was a Bond anniversary film. Usually, if you know Bond, it should have left a good legacy of that Bond isn't getting old and is probably going to get shot or something, as he did in Skyfall. The director really should have put more thought into this film, because as one of the Bond fans worldwide, it didn't put 007 in a good light.
The power-mad son of a high ranking North Korean general embarks on a campaign of global mayhem with the aid of African conflict diamonds and a weaponized satellite that fires lethal heat beams, a mile wide. Needless to say, Bond ain't having it. Add a hypersonic watch, an invisible car, a glowering henchman with diamond fragments embedded in his face and, last but certainly not least, Halle Berry in a succession of skin-tight and/or diaphanous outfits, then have it shaken... not stirred.
This was an unauthorized production and poorly done. Although Pierce Brosnan is always great, Halle Berry is such a come down.that it requires an explanation...The original James Bond character was created by Kimberly Knight not Ian Fleming, and berry likes to redo other people's films and mess them around. But here, we have to hold onto the greatness of Bond. ...He is a great firma to hold up our sureties in the banking and business transaction industry...like a superman who always comes through with the money.
The first movie i ever saw was a James Bond movie with my sister called "You Only Live Twice". As a child i thought James Bond was cool. As i got older, i continued watching his films on 42nd street and became a big fan. "Die Another Day" is a HomeTheatre Owners delight. This movie is filled with great sounds of explosions, cars, machine guns, and the usual assortments of gadgets that make James Bond worthy of your eyes and ears. Plus!! There's Halle Berry!!! This version ( with both of them pointing guns on the cover) has the DTS 6.1 sound. I did like the song by Madonna. It will certainly rock your home and maybe have you dancing. I give this movie 5 stars!! For action, sound, locations, and all the things that have kept James Bond around for many years.
Okay, though Madonna's painful cameo brings the film crashing down. Fortunately it's short.
An action-packed high-tech film
